Holiday Season is Rapidly Approaching; How Do You Deal With the Extra Stress?

Hi everyone,

In next month's newsletter, Julie would like to offer tips from all the communities as to how we can best handle holiday stress.

I try not to look too far ahead and therefore avoid stressing a given activity until I have to. As well, I only sign up or commit myself to one activity at a time. I have a very large extended family who like to get together often (a stress-inducing, noisy crowd of about 25 once we are all in the same place). In order to get through those events, I have learned to delegate tasks (such as who should bring what food/supplies) rather than trying to do everything myself. As well, organization is key. I make gift, food, and activity lists so that they are easier to remember. On more than one occasion I have had to excuse myself from a family gathering to go take a nap- especially when I am not feeling well. I buy about 80% of my holiday gifts over the internet because I am unable to stand/walk for very long and cannot stand the crowds in shopping centers.

What do you do to mitigate the extra stress of shopping, family, social obligations, work, loud environments and various obligations? I look forward to learning from all of you!

Hi David,

Thank you for the great ideas, I love all of your advice and tips. I especially like the idea of getting the kids off to care so they can get a break and vice versa. My favorite part of the say is when my tweens are in school...the house is quiet and serene!

So- during holiday stress I think it is ok to take a break from friends and family and get some alone time!

Great suggestions, lyme?! Thank you for sharing how you handle extras over the holidays. I like your idea to do things one a ta time- I do the same thing to avoid getting overwhelmed. By the way I live in the NW too so we have quite a bit in common!

I also have to assign my husband more tasks than usual but I think he appreciates feeling useful. Nowadays he just volunteers for what he knows I would ask him to do.

Though extra stressful, I am looking forward to winter; I love the nip in the air!
