Help me choose Essential Fatty Acids... RANCID & STINKY not allowed! (lol)

I keep searching for the right EFAs by going to a variety of websites, seeking advice. Dr Oz has different ideas than other practitioners.

Seems the DHA needs to be 600 and total mg over a 1000. Also, there is the issue of of filtering and reducing additives.

I read that most EPAs are rancid, so gross!

Where are you buying your supplements, and what brands are popular? NO fish burps allowed!

Also, I need to add a plant based EFA.

The last thing that you need is fungus! lol Have you looked at the refrigerated oils in the health food store? Probably less likely to be rancid. But I found this link discussing pharmaceutical grade fish oil, supposed to have impurities filtered out better.http://www.streetdirectory.com/travel_guide/4080/health/pharmaceutical_grade_fish_oil____why_is_it_different.html

Looks like the ratio is as you states and good filtering. Maybe that's what your hearing about.

Different practitioners have different ideas than one another too!

Did you read this one already? http://www.livestrong.com/article/94117-pharmaceuticalgrade-brands-fish-oil/

Pick out a few brands and go onto Amazon and read the buyer reviews on them. Might help narrow your choice down.

yeah, fish burps are gross! lol

Jen,

This is more specific info.

I was just watching a show by Brenda Watson who talked about fish oils and how to choose one. She said there a four things that you should look for when you buy fish oils.

1- check label and EACH capsule should contain 1,000mg of Omega 3, and dosage she recommended was 3,000mg a day.

2- It should have Vitamin D 1,000 mg in it too.

3- It should be enteric coated so that it passes through gut to small intestines for absorption. That also eliminates the "fish burps", also mentions lipase to stop the fish burps.

4- Purity - should look for IFOS certiied on the label, this is international certification of purity. Here is info from her website... (she was discussing Leaky Gut Too) One of my favorite subjects. lol

Hope this helps,

Ally,

That helps quite a bit. I do not get out of the house often to visit a health food store.

I am reading a book by Dr Singleton, The Lyme Disease Solution, as part of the Book Club. He talks about Lyme arthritis which I don’t understand very well as I haven’t finished that section. It seems that a good Omega 3 helps joints, eyes, inflammation, and a whole bunch of things.

However, taking a supplement that hasn’t had the mercury filtered out is a very bad thing!! I’m concerned because I’m taking a very inexpensive fish oil capsule for 3 months, hope it hasn’t done more harm than good!

Thanks for all the links, I will read through and may have more questions!

Jen

Jen,

yes, I only wish I could take them. I have the beginning of oseoarthritis in my knees and hands, plus the drying Sjogrens. Gotta watch out for the choice of supplements. You very well may be putting more junk into your system. The speaker that I mentioned above said that the cheaper Omega fish oils may have 30% fish oil and the other 75% in the pill is bad Saturated Fats! Yuk, that's not good. Better off with no supplement at all.

I have to finish the Autoimmune Epidemic before starting another book. It takes me forever lately to read a book.

Hi Jen,

I was looking up which fish oils meet Brenda Watson's recommendations for purity, certification, enteric coating and added vitamin D. This is one that she does recommend.

You can see each capsule has the omega 3 without the other "filler junk oils".
