Fatigue and Motivation Strategies

I am wondering what tools people use to keep themselves out of bed and doing the things that are necessary to support life. You know, (job, calling people, making Paleo food).

I simply find the siren call of my bed or even distractions like newspapers too irrisitible and that keeps me from skillful behaviors.

I have been meditating for several years, but If I do it in the morning, I always want to sleep afterwards.

Hi tjb076,

I am riddled with fatigue every day, regardless of whether I get a good nights sleep. The feeling that I am walking through mud follows me every where, every day. To answer your question I simply focus on one small step at a time. If I think too far ahead the fatigue just gets worse and I become overwhelmed. My method to do one thing at a time keeps me from getting bogged down mentally and thinking that I can't do it. Also keeping organized is helpful- if my life or things I have to take care of are not organized I feel even worse and fatigue rears its head again. What do you do to get out of bed?

hi .. l think that a "routine" is a great help... whatever that might be for you... get up at a certain time... do this.. do that...etc. but find what is good for you... spoil yourself...!!!! another is to keep in touch with folks... text -g mail- facebook etc.... another is to get outside and walk or whatever everyday... off the top of my head theses are helpful things for me...)

Hi Nirupama,

You make a good point that we have to do things one at a time and only for as long as we can stand up! I appreciate that you mention we have to accept that we cannot do the things we used to do. I get very frustrated sometimes that my functioning ability is so low. I got infected in 2009 and since then have had to quit school and work. It is difficult to look back at my former self without longing...

Hi Richard,

Great tips and strategies! I like that you say "spoil yourself"- I am a firm believer that we have to take care of ourselves or we will not be able to take care of others. For instance the better ?I take care of myself and maybe even splurge on something nice (usually a steak or a forbidden food) makes me feel better...and therefore I make the people around me happy. thanks for the insights!

you are a special person!!!!

I agree Richard. There are so many special people on this site I feel absolutely blessed to be here.

me too... sorry l don't post more... will do better...)

We would love to hear your wonderful words of wisdom Richard!

I also look forward to checking in daily and conversing with all my Lyme friends! I do so first thing in the morning because I am excited to see what everyone is talking about!

I am forturnate, that I have a phone call every morning with my brother at 6 a.m. and we discuss spiritual books and meditation.

If I have to work, I usually will drink coffee because it seems absolutely essential to getting moving. Even though caffeine is a no-no.

Usually it is necessary to leave the house or I will just climb back into bed. Tomorrow I have to get up at 4:30 a.m.

Thanks!

How did you get medical marijuana for a disease that doesn't exist?

slmo:

I am very sorry to hear about the total loss of life, including school and job.

I am fortunate enough not to have reached that point yet.

I was just diagnosed and started treatment 3 weeks ago. I actually feel worse now.

With all the negative feedback from the Pros (including our State Surgeon General) I sometimes wonder if I am just making myself worse by seeking treatment

David:

thanks for the extensive reply.

The top 3 priorities is great advice. I often get distracted, and thats even when I have a list.

I guess it is because of not wanting to do the mundane. But the mundane keeps us alive.

My fiance and her children left me 4 years ago. Now, after diagnosis, I think her leaving might have had a lot to do with borelliosis. But then I have no idea when I got infected, nor what "character flaws" might have to do with the disease. I am trying to be gentle with myself.

I have a slogan "I choose to treat myself kindly, with compassion and forgiveness"

Tom

Many thanks.

I must tell myself that. It is my responsibility only

thanks Richard

Thank you very much for the reply tjb076. I am very glad that you have maintained functionality! Maybe you will be one of the lucky ones who pulls through just fine.

Regarding whether you are making things worse by getting treated- that is an issue with many pros and cons. On one hand you need antibiotics but they make you feel worse. on the other hand you can do nothing...some people can successfully manage this disease with herbal remedies, restricted diets and homeopathic treatments.

My honest opinion is that you may need to take abx for a long time- you and your doctor can monitor your progress by monitoring your side effects. Have you heard of the herxheimer reaction? it could be playing a role in you feeling worse. Google this: Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction. You'll get many articles about the fact that when one treats lyme disease with antibiotics he or she will feel worse before better.

Hang in there, friend.

Hi Tom,

I really enjoyed your slogan- I will use that from now on in my internal monologue that never quiets down. I am sorry to hear that your fiancée left. I imagine you feel a bit lonely on top of not feeling well. We are all here for you and will provide the best support possible. Always be gentle with yourself. I have 2 kids and think about whether I am letting them down all the time. But then I remember that I think the little things I do can add up to some big ones. You could do that too...small steps add up.

Hi tjb076 and Nirupama,

My Lyme doctor gave me the authorization based on the constellation of symptoms I provided. So she was didn't have to say lyme specifically. I think it is the best medicine for pain, spasms, anxiety/depression, insomnia, side effects from abx, and panic attacks. Thank you for mentioning herx to tj. I feel terrible when I take the meds but herx explains the whole reason.

Hi tjb075,

That is great that you have that phone call with your brother. And you do this everyday? That is absolutely awesome. I too consume coffee in the morning. I cannot even stand up without some caffeine coursing through my veins! I agree about leaving the house. There has to be a reason or I will be in bed all day. I do the best I can but only get out of bed and to the grocery store about twice a week. So it sounds like you are still able to work? Hope you are having a good day...
